Get Involved!

We have loads of opportunities to get involved in our work.  Please email us at to find out more, or take a look at whats going on below:

Pretty much everyone has a skill that they can share which others – from baking to making Christmas cards to riding a unicycle. The SkillShare project holds regular events where people can get together and share their skills, so we can all do more, and have fun doing it. Our next SkillShare events will be aiming to create a human powerstation during GreenWeek 2012.

St AndRe-Use

St AndRe-Use is a student-run re-use operation and we want to recruit some more volunteers! We are looking for enthusiastic students who care about making sustainable change in St Andrews to help us with events and the day-to-day running of St AndRe-Use. Volunteers will be asked to help out at collection and drop-off events, and there will be the opportunity for you to join the committee and help with planning, publicity, and maintaining our online forums – or anything else you think would help St AndRe-Use be more successful!

 Local Holidaying

Our Local Holidaying project needs more destinations and stories to fill the webpages. Have you been on a local or low-carbon (no flight) trip somewhere further afield? Do you have photos or a story to share? How about some travel tips? Please send your story, photos or tips in so we can publish them online and give others more ideas about where they could go or what they can do more locally during the holidays. We’ve also arranged with the Travel Service to provide some pretty fantastic prizes for the best story and photo combinations – just in case you needed any more incentive to get involved!

Are you a car driver, or someone who likes to carshare?!  If so we are looking for champions to help us promote car-sharing as a simple, effective and useful form of transport.  We are also looking for residents who might be interested in setting up a car club in St Andrews on the same lines as the wheelshare car club.

Inter-Hall Energy Competition

The Inter-Hall Energy Competition is in full swing, and you can find out more on our website.  We are looking for champions in each Halls of Residence to help us get the work out about the competition and to work with the Environment Reps to support their work helping people to reduce their carbon emissions through energy.

Recycling & Food waste

Interested in helping the Transition team to reduce waste in the University and encourage composting at home and in Halls?  We are looking for some champions who are based in Halls of Residences to help us out and promote recycling and composting within their Hall.  We are also looking for some students to help us with an audit of waste facilities in Halls of Residences and across the University.

Community Garden

The Community Garden needs 3 kinds of volunteers.  Email or come into the Transition office to speak to Alistair about any of the opportunities available.

  • Garden volunteers – We always need more hands in the garden in our communal growing sessions on Weds 2-4pm and Sunday 2-4pm.  Just come along to muck in!
  • Garden leaders – We need people who have experience of gardening and have the confidence to lead groups of student volunteers in the communal garden sessions.
  • Publicity and events volunteers – For those garden volunteers who want to help out with some extra events or publicity for the garden but don’t want to lead gardening sessions.

We are looking for people to help out with our food workshops.  If you have some cooking skills and would like to lead a workshop showing others how to cook local, healthy and low-carbon meals then get in touch with Transition  through
