St AndRe-Use

End of semester clearing out

We know it’s hard trying to pack and get rid of unwanted stuff when you have so little time after exams. That’s why we are working with Estates Environment team and Residences to make it as easy as possible to find good homes for the things you can’t take away with you.

Most halls have collection points for charitable donations to the charity of their own choice, and to Frontline Fife (a local charity which provides items to help formerly homeless people set up in their new home).

St AndRe-Use is specifically looking for donations of unwanted Crockery (clean mugs, plates, bowls etc), Cutlery and Stationery (incl part-used pads of paper, pens, folders, etc) to pass onto students in September. Please drop off your items into our collection boxes (grey plastic crates) in DRA, John Burnet, Sallies, St Regs, Andrew Melville, Albany Park and McIntosh hall. Look out for the posters. Other drop-offs will be arranged over the next week or two.

Please donate other unwanted items via the Frontline Fife or other charitable collection bins in your hall or charity shops in town. You can also use the St AndRe-use Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/128369933455/  to rehome items, or try selling them on the Facebook Flea Market https://www.facebook.com/groups/249681118462606/

About St AndRe-Use

St AndRe-Use started in 2009 and was set up to help divert functional items from being thrown away, when others may still have a use for it. “Another man’s waste is another man’s treasure…”

Operating mainly through the StAnd Reuse Facebook page, it provides a convenient online forum which allows students, staff, and residents of St Andrews an alternative to the conventional – and wasteful – purchasing and disposal routine. Rather than throwing out functional items you are fed up of, offer them to others. Rather than always buying new items, see if anyone else has but no longer needs the item you want. Save unnecessary waste from landfill, save money, save shopping stress, and see what treasures you can find in other people’s ‘trash’. It’s that simple.

Everything from TVs to textbooks and clothes to collanders – and even a small trampoline – have been re-homed and re-used since St AndRe-Use started in 2009. As a basic rule of thumb, if it works someone else will probably want it. Disposal to landfill or incineration should always be a last resort.

St AndRe-Use also arrange Collections and Give-Aways throughout the year – check the Facebook page for more details.

If they’re too valuablCover photoe to give away, try selling your unwanted items on the St Andrews Flea Market Facebook Group.  A great place to pick up bargains and find anything from books to bikes, DVDs to designer dresses……

St AndRe-Use is Recruiting!

We are looking for enthusiastic students who care about making sustainable change in St Andrews to help us with events and the day-to-day running of St AndRe-Use. Volunteers will be asked to help out at collection and drop-off events, and there will be the opportunity for you to join the committee and help with planning, publicity, and maintaining our online forums – or anything else you think would help St AndRe-Use be more successful!
